FoodBabe.com shares an unchecked opinion about Snopes.

Snopes.com started as a website to determine if certain urban legends are true or false. They provided in-depth coverage on whether or not someone put a naked picture in a Disney movie. They would do intense research to determine if McDonald's used some kind of pink paste to make hamburgers in lieu of using actual beef. They also uncovered the truth regarding the name change from Kentucky Fried Chicken to KFC because a secret conspiracy because they used some kind of mutant chicken instead of real chicken.

Unfortunately, Snopes decided it wanted to be the arbiter of "truth" and become one in the the long list of politically-biased so-called supposed "Fact Check" websites. There success at being a neutral arbiter is dubious at best.

Claims of Bias

Many people claim that Snopes has an inherent bias towards left wing politicians. If Snopes does not have an inherent bias, perhaps they should do a better job of not having an inherent bias. To wit, Snopes made the claim on there website that there is no information that would prove that Hunter Biden's incriminating laptop was Hunter Biden's incriminating laptop.

We sent questions to the Post’s editors asking how the Post verified the authenticity of the hard drive’s contents and why it included personal images from it which were not pertinent to the story. We will update if we hear back.(source)

It should be noted that if a fact check ever involved Donald Trump, Snopes has never reached out to anyone asking why information was included that was not pertinent to the story.

Also, if Snopes really wanted to avoid the accusations of bias, it would probably not have been in their best interested to turn the second half of the article into an editorial about why President Trump was impeached and went out of their way to make sure that, even if Hunter Biden were not guilty of improprieties, Joe Biden was completely innocent. Although, the proof article they sited seemed to have forgotten to mention that the investigator Joe Biden bragged about firing just happened to be the person investigating the company where Hunter was one of the board members.

FoodBabe.com Snopes Criticism

FoodBabe.com has written an exhaustive critique of Snopes, which you can read here. While FoodBabe.com may not be recognized as fact checking organization, it appears that their work is at least thorough; more thorough, perhaps, than anything Snopes has ever written (outside of their claim that Mr. Ed was really a zebra).

FoodBabe.com makes the following claims about the Snopes website.

  • Snopes is now 50% owned by an ad agency (Proper Media) and they make money by generating millions of views on the 3rd-party advertisements on their website. It simply makes sense for them to seek out articles that are viral to “debunk”, so that they can piggy-back on that traffic and generate more advertising revenue.

  • Snopes was founded by a husband and wife team who are now in the middle of a contentious divorce in which founder David Mikkelsen has been accused of embezzling $98,000 of company money to spend on “himself and prostitutes”.

  • Snopes now has a hired team of suspect fact checkers who collaborate to debunk falsehoods that are trending on the internet.

  • These fact checkers reportedly have no editorial oversight and do not follow standard journalistic procedures such as interviewing the authors of articles they are trying to debunk to get all sides of the story.

  • Snopes doesn’t have a formal screening process for hiring fact checkers and for evaluating applicants for any potential conflicts of interest. Without such standards, it is very easy for them to be infiltrated by those who work with the industry and who have a hidden agenda.
